The Redstone Company Advises M-Squared Renewables on Financing of Rose Valley Wind Project
We are incredibly proud to announce the successful financial close of a transformative renewable energy transaction in Saskatchewan.
Recently, the team at The Redstone Company had the distinct privilege of serving as the Commercial Advisor to M-Squared Renewables. Working alongside their private sector co-developer Potentia Renewables and First Nations partners, we assisted M-Squared Renewables on their structuring and execution of a $164.4 million loan package from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) to fund a major new wind energy facility: the Rose Valley Wind Project.
This transaction represents a massive step forward for Canada’s energy transition. However, its true significance lies deep within its commercial architecture: it serves as a bankable, scalable blueprint for majority Indigenous-owned clean energy infrastructure.
Here is a closer look at why this deal matters, the complexities of structuring it, and what it signals for the future of Canadian project finance.
Aligning Capital with Community Vision
"The days of viewing Indigenous communities merely as passive stakeholders or landless royalty recipients in infrastructure projects are coming to an end. Today, the gold standard is meaningful equity and operational ownership."
In this project, the First Nations partners hold a historic 51% majority ownership stake. Structuring a deal of this magnitude—where a community, a specialized renewable developer like M-Squared Renewables, and a major private sector partner come together—requires meticulous commercial alignment.
Our role as Commercial Advisor was to bridge the gap between the vision of the partnership and the rigorous underwriting requirements of institutional capital. We advised M-Squared Renewables across all aspects commercially:
economics and financial modelling
project technical and commercial due diligence
project financing analysis
engagement with co-developer.
The Role of the Canada Infrastructure Bank
The $164.4 million commitment from the CIB was the critical catalyst that brought this project over the finish line.
The CIB’s mandate to invest in clean power and support Indigenous economic reconciliation makes them a uniquely valuable lender in the current Canadian market. Their participation provides the patient, low-cost capital necessary to make large-scale, capital-intensive wind projects economically viable—especially when pioneering progressive ownership structures.
Powering Saskatchewan’s Future
Saskatchewan is uniquely positioned to capitalize on wind energy, boasting some of the best onshore wind resources in the country. The Rose Valley Wind Project will deliver crucial clean, reliable megawatts to the provincial grid, directly supporting Saskatchewan's broader emissions reduction targets.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the local economic impact will be substantial:
Job Creation: Driving employment during both the construction and operational phases.
Intergenerational Revenue: Generating stable, long-term revenue streams for the partner communities.
Supply Chain Stimulation: Boosting the regional and provincial industrial supply chain.
Looking Ahead: The New Formula for Canadian Nation-Building
As we look to the future of infrastructure development in Canada, this transaction stands out as a clear indicator of where our industry is heading. The intersection of private sector expertise, institutional capital, and genuine Indigenous ownership is the definitive formula for the next generation of Canadian project finance.
We want to extend our deepest congratulations to the leadership at M-Squared Renewables, their private sector partner Potentia Renewables, the visionary First Nations leadership, and the dedicated team at the Canada Infrastructure Bank. It took immense collaboration, patience, and commercial creativity to bring this to life.
We are honored to have played a role in advising on this historic transaction, and we look forward to seeing the turbines turn.
